Science

Intent

At Broseley C of E Primary School, we bring science alive through explicit teaching and rich hands‑on experiences that nurture curiosity and a lasting fascination with the world. Guided by our values of Trust, Love, Perseverance, and Hope, we encourage pupils to explore, question, and think like young scientists. Our enquiry‑led curriculum builds secure scientific knowledge and helps children understand how science shapes their lives today and in the future.

Implementation

Science is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops pupils’ knowledge in biology, chemistry, and physics, alongside the full range of Working Scientifically skills. Teachers activate prior learning, teach vocabulary explicitly, and make meaningful links across subjects so that children remember more over time. Practical investigations, outdoor learning, and real‑world contexts enrich lessons and help pupils see the relevance of science in everyday life. Cultural capital opportunities—such as visits, workshops, and STEM role models—broaden horizons and raise aspirations. Assessment is ongoing and purposeful, enabling teachers to address misconceptions and secure strong foundations for future learning.

Impact

Our science curriculum enables pupils to develop secure scientific knowledge, confidence in Working Scientifically, and a genuine curiosity about the world. Children demonstrate our school values: Perseverance in challenging enquiries, Trust in their ideas and in collaborative investigation, Love through respect for the natural world, and Hope as they recognise their potential to make a positive difference. Pupils leave Broseley as reflective, responsible young scientists who can think critically, use scientific vocabulary with confidence, and apply their learning independently. They are well prepared for the next stage of their education and understand that science is relevant, meaningful, and full of possibility.

PSQM

Through effective leadership of science, working with local schools and actively looking to be professionally developed by experts through CPD, Broseley C of E Primary School has been awarded the prestigious Primary Science Quality Mark accreditation for 2022-2025. As one of only 250 schools nationwide, we have been recognised for our teacher autonomy and innovation while at the same time offering a clear framework for development in science subject leadership, teaching, and learning.

Schools that achieve PSQM demonstrate commitment and expertise in science leadership, teaching, and learning. As a school, we are extremely proud of our achievement.
