Safeguarding children means keeping them safe from neglect and abuse. Anyone who comes into contact with children and families has a responsibility to safeguard and promote their welfare. This means:
● Protecting children from maltreatment;
● Preventing impairment of children’s health or development;
● Ensuring children are growing in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care
● Taking action to enable all children to have the best life chances
Parents and carers are normally our first point of contact for any concerns we have. We will support parents and carers and work in collaboration with them to protect children. As it is our statutory duty, we will report to Children’s Social Care if we have any reason to believe that a child may be at risk of suffering, abuse or neglect.
Are you a Parent or Guardian? Protecting children is your responsibility too…
If you think a child or young person is being harmed or is at risk of being harmed you must contact Children’s Services and tell them your concerns. Alternatively, it might be you who is being harmed. Don’t delay!
You can report your concerns by calling 0345 678 9021.
You can also speak to:
- Public Protection Unit (West Mercia Police): 0300 333 3000
- NSPCC: 0800 800 5000
- Childline: 0800 1111
If a child is in imminent danger you must contact the emergency services immediately on 999.

Radicalisation is defined as the act or process of making a person more radical or favoring of extreme or fundamental changes in political, economic or social conditions, institutions or habits of the mind. Extremism is defined as the holding of extreme political or religious views.
Broseley C of E Primary School has a zero tolerance approach to extremist behaviour for all school community members. We rely on our strong values to steer our work and ensure the pastoral care of our children protects them from exposure to negative influences.
Broseley C of E Primary School is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its children. As a school we recognise that safeguarding against radicalisation is no different from safeguarding against any other vulnerability. All staff are expected to uphold and promote the fundamental principles of British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and we have an action plan in place to ensure that all of these areas are covered by the children in school.
• Children are encouraged to adopt and live out our Core Values. These complement our rules: Be Kind; Be Ready : Be Safe and our Christian values and the key “British Values” of tolerance, respect, understanding, compassion and harmonious living.
• Children are helped to understand the importance of democracy and freedom of speech, through assemblies, discussion and elected School Council members
• Children are taught how to keep themselves safe, in and out of school (through the ongoing curriculum and when using the internet.
• Children participate in local community events so that they appreciate and value their neighbours and friends who may not share their faith background.
• Children’s wellbeing, confidence and resilience is promoted through our planned curriculum and extra-curricular learning opportunities.
• Children are supported in making good choices from a very young age, so they understand the impact and consequences of their actions on others.
The Role of the Curriculum
Our curriculum promotes respect, tolerance and diversity. Children are encouraged to express themselves through discussions, debates and consultations. The RE (Religious Education), PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), and SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) provision is embedded across the curriculum. Children learn about all major faiths and visit places of worship wherever possible. We also have regular assemblies on different faiths. Children are also taught about how to stay safe when using the internet and during our curriculum evenings, we give the parents practical advice about this to use at home too via our school facebook site.
Although serious incidents involving radicalisation have not occurred at Broseley C of E Primary School to date, it is important for us to be constantly vigilant and remain fully informed about the issues which affect the region in which we teach. Staff are reminded to suspend any professional disbelief that instances of radicalisation ‘could not happen here’ and to refer any concerns through the Child Protection/ Safeguarding Lead Teachers.

Operation Encompass is a process whereby the police and the council will inform a member of staff if a child or young person has experienced any domestic abuse incident. This will be done prior to the start of the next school day. Information sharing between professional agencies allows school staff to provide emotional and practical support to their pupils experiencing domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse can broadly be defined as ‘any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour; violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who have been intimate partners or family members. This can include, but is not limited to, the following types of abuse – psychological, physical, sexual, financial and emotional.’
Operation Encompass ensures that a member of the school staff, usually the Designated Safeguarding Lead, is given special training, to enable them to liaise with the police and council in receiving and using the information that has been shared, in confidence.
The sharing of details under Operation Encompass is permitted under Statutory Safeguarding Legislation and in respect of local authority schools under the Crime and Disorder Act (for the prevention of crime) and doing so without the child’s or parent’s consent is permissible under both pieces of legislation and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
